As a designer, one of the things that I’m constantly trying to do is to develop both my design abilities and my business skills. There are lots of brilliant creatives who have gone before me and developed successful businesses and then written about it, so one of the things I’m aiming to do this year is to read more design books and learn from them.
This Year Will Be Different by Monika Kanokova is all about entrepreneurial women, by entrepreneurial women. It’s described as a practical guide for everyone who wants to start their own business, and has loads of tips, tricks, stories and interviews with women who make money in the creative sector. It covers loads of different things that you need to think about when starting your own business, such as making a website, sharing your work, standing out, being productive and how to treat your customers. I really enjoyed that amongst all the practical advice there are lots of interviews with real women telling their stories of how they’ve built a business that they love.
When reading books like this it’s often hard to absorb everything at once, so I like to look out for common themes that run throughout the book to have as takeaway points. One of the things that kept coming up in all of the interviews was the need to work hard and keep going. It’s easy to look at the success of others and think that it just came naturally to them or they just got lucky, but in reality to make a business work you need to put in a lot of hard work and effort. Success rarely happens overnight and usually things take time to get going and build momentum. As a small business owner this was definitely just what I needed to read and I’m feeling very inspired to keep going and keep working hard! Watch this space!
P.S. I’ve got loads of new work to share in the next few days over on Instagram, why not follow along to see what I’ve been up to?
