Recently I’ve been wishing for spring so much (ok, since about October actually!!) – I can’t wait for the lighter evenings, warmer days and signs of new life and I definitely find it difficult to cope with the endless dark and grey days.
Obviously living in the UK we get our fair share of those dark and grey days, and now I’ve accepted the fact that we’re not going to move to a warm, mediterranean climate (pleeeeease Nathan?!) any time soon, I’ve been looking for ways of bringing some light and warmth into my days.
I buy these every week from the supermarket and they bring such a welcome burst of cheeriness to my desk! If daffodils aren’t your thing then tulips are a good alternative and come in lots of gorgeous colours.
Another quick and easy way you can up the cosiness factor is with candles. I like to keep a couple on my desk for when it gets a bit grey and cold. My current favourites are a vanilla Ikea one and a Christmas cookie Yankee candle one (thanks Rebekah!), and I’ve also recently bought some soy wax flakes and wicks so that I can make my own!
A morning swim
I’m guessing this one is the ‘surprise’ on the list… flowers and candles are fairly predictable, but swimming? To be honest, when I started going swimming, sometimes the thought of dragging myself out of bed on a dark winter’s morning was a bit depressing, but once I actually get to the pool I definitely forget all of that! Something about the rush of the humid, chlorine-filled air as you step through the door and the feel of the warm water as you get into the pool always makes me feel like I’ve been wrapped in a nice, friendly hug. (Side note, we go to one of those lovely ancient community pools where the heating is cranked up… seeing the hardy swimmers down on Southsea beach at 8:30am does make me shiver a little!!)
What about you? Any good tips to share on how to make the winter months feel a bit warmer and more bearable?
