Today’s DIY is all about the calm and minimal cosiness that January brings after the glitz and sparkle of December. One of my cushions needed a new cover and instead of going for something plain I thought I’d try something a little more exciting! The best part about this cushion cover DIY is that it’s so simple and quick to make, and if you’re like me you’ll probably end up wanting to make hundreds of little pom poms to decorate everything in sight afterwards.
You will need:
How to make
Begin by making the cushion cover. I make mine using a simple envelope pattern (shown below). You will need to adjust the measurements according to your cushion inner but a general rule of thumb is to make your cover 10% smaller than your cushion inner, and allow for a 1cm seam allowance on each side. (So, my cushion is 40cm, 10% = 36cm plus 1cm each side, = 38cm wide)
To sew up the cushion cover, you sew a 1cm seam down one of the short edges. Then, you fold over the seam you’ve just shown into the centre (a, below), and then repeat with the other side over the top (b). Pin down the sides and sew a straight seam along both sides (c).
Now you can turn your cushion cover the right way out and it’s ready for decorating!
To make the pom poms, wrap your wool loosely around the end of a fork about 90 times. It’s important that it’s not wrapped too tightly so that you can tie it up after you’ve finished wrapping. Then tie a piece of wool around the middle of the fork as tightly as you can, making the wool into a sort of bow shape. Once it’s tied up you can slide the wool off the end of the fork.
To finish the pom pom, all you need to do is cut the loops of wool with your scissors. Once all the ends have been cut, you can then tidy up the edges of the pom pom – some bits may need quite drastic pruning! (This part made me think of the photos you see online of poodles having their hair cut into perfect circles ready for dog shows!)
Once you’ve made 4 pom poms, you can sew them onto the corners of your cushion cover. Insert your cushion inner and your new look cushion is complete! 🙂
